Medicaid & Nursing Home Planning
THE BEST TIME TO PLAN IS NOW
Medicaid & Nursing Home Planning
The cost of nursing home and assisted living care is extremely expensive. Fortunately, there are legal ways to preserve assets for your family, and qualify for Medicaid to pay for nursing home or assisted living care. Medicaid has both asset and income limits that govern who qualifies. There are also many types of assets that are exempt (meaning that they are not taken into consideration, and they do not count as an asset) when you apply for Medicaid coverage. There is also a 5 year lookback period In which Medicaid evaluates asset transfers that have taken place before you apply.
I can guide you on which assets count and which assets are exempt for purposes of qualifying for Medicaid. I can explain how the 5 year lookback period works. Frankly, Medicaid planning and the amount of assets that can be preserved will differ greatly depending upon whether you are single or married; whether one or both spouses are seeking nursing home or assisted living care; and whether you need care quickly or have more time to plan. You need an attorney to guide you through the process.
If a nursing home or assisted living center offers to do the Medicaid application for you, it is important to remember that generally speaking the staff member doing this is not an attorney and may not have your best interest in mind. I can work with you to make sure that your best interests are protected and you can preserve as many assets as possible for you and your family.
I would be happy to talk with you about your personal situation, share my knowledge of the Medicaid qualification process, and go over various options available to you. I work on a flat fee basis so you know exactly what the cost will be.
